As a rule, glazed floor tiles shouldn’t be used where water, oil or grease is consistently present. Improper maintenance can result in a contaminant buildup on the surface, which causes slippage. Daltile does not recommend glazed floor tiles on exterior applications unless tiles are sufficiently protected from direct weather, textured and not polished or semi-polished. Ramped surfaces require a more slip-resistant surface, and we recommend a minimum of .80 COF. Also, Daltile does not recommend polished surfaces in any areas subject to water, oil or grease.
As a rule, glazed floor tiles shouldn’t be used where water, oil or grease is consistently present. No matter the application, improper maintenance can result in a contaminant buildup on the surface, which causes slippage. Daltile does not recommend the use of glazed floor tile or porcelain tile in a commercial kitchen unless the COF > .80 wet. Daltile does not recommend glazed floor or porcelain tile on pool decks or glazed or unglazed ceramic and porcelain tiles on exterior floor applications unless the tile surface has a minimal glaze (pool decks only), is equal to or > .60 COF wet, has a textured surface and is not polished or semi-polished. You can minimize slippery conditions by limiting foot traffic in wet conditions, removing contaminants promptly, effective drainage and proper maintenance. Ramped surfaces require a more slip-resistant surface, and we recommend a minimum of .80 COF. Daltile recommends customers have tile independently tested to determine if the product meets the requirements of the customer's preferred test method (if other than ASTM C1028) prior to product selection. Remember, no floor tile is "slip proof."
